자폐연구소Autism Research Institute는 지속적으로 연구 정보를 공개하고 있는데요. 그 중 하나를 소개합니다. 감각처리장애를 연구하고 있는 루시 제인 밀러Lucy Jane Miller 박사가 강연한 내용입니다. 내용은 생각보다 상당히 어려운데요. 대략적으로 중요한 내용을 요약한 것은 다음과 같습니다.
Sensory processing refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into responses. For those with Sensory Processing Disorder, sensory information goes into the brain but does not get organized into appropriate responses. Those with SPD perceive and/or respond to sensory information differently than most other people. Unlike people who have impaired sight or hearing, those with Sensory Processing Disorder do detect the sensory information; however, the sensory information gets “mixed up” in their brain and therefore the responses are inappropriate in the context in which they find themselves.
감각처리란 신경체계가 감각들로부터 메시지를 받아서 그 메시지를 반응으로 전환하는 과정을 의미한다. 감각처리장애를 가진 사람들의 경우, 감각정보가 뇌에 도달하기는 하지만 적절한 반응이 발생하지는 않는다. 감각처리장애를 가진 사람들은 대다수의 사람들과는 다른 방식으로 감각정보를 인식하고 반응한다. 시력이나 청력을 잃는 사람과는 달리, 감각처리장애를 가진 사람들은 감각정보를 탐지한다. 하지만 감각정보는 그들의 뇌속에서 뒤엉켜버리고, 그 결과 그들이 처해있는 상황에서 적절한 반응을 하지 못한다.
이 연구는 자폐인의 경우 감각처리장애가 매우 높은 빈도로 발생하고 있음을 지적합니다. 아이들이 시각적인 자극을 추구하기 위해서 손장난을 하거나, 특정 소리를 유발해서 청각적인 자극을 추구하는 것이 모두 감각처리장애와 관련이 높은 것이죠. 감각정보를 제대로 인식할 수 없다면 더 이상의 긍정적인 발달이 어렵습니다. 그렇기 때문에 AIT 청각통합훈련과 같은 감각통합훈련이 자폐아들에게 꼭 필요합니다.
